The old-fashioned way.

The landscape in those parts was always the same. Consisting of rocks, and dry, thorny bushes, it was often difficult to find a path forward. The elements that comprised the landscapes of various places were always the same. Dust was never in short supply. It was everywhere; both inside and outside.

They were on their second day of travel. They weren't keeping up a great pace and had only covered seventy or so miles, which meant that there were nearly as many miles still left to cover before they reached Cloverdale Creek, which was their tentative destination. The slower pace did mean that they less likely to damage the carriage, which despite its elegance, was built to usher gentlemen across a paved city street, not to gallivant amongst coyotes and pronghorns. It had, in fact, undergone some modifications to allow it to cross rougher terrain, but it could still only do so with great caution. It was the best they could come up with in the short time they had to prepare. If they were to have maintained a more urgent pace, they would have given the impression of being in a hurry, and those in a hurry tend to attract the attention of both outlaws and lawmen, albeit for different reasons.

To make a more important impression, the carriage was pulled by six horses. Joe, especially in the first few hours, had discovered that having to hold six reigns attached to beasts that had never worked together until now was not so easy. For as much as he attempted to put on a good face, more than a few times he had let slip a few choice words, even blaspheming a time or two after taking a few swigs. Not exactly a high-class coachman.

In the cabin, which could comfortably accommodate up to six people, only Aaron and Hugg occupied it. The excuse he used to travel in the cabin was that he needed to work on drafting the counterfeit documents. The reality was that, shriveled as he was, he would not have lasted more than an hour on horseback. Victor mostly drove the baggage cart, but would occasionally enter the cabin to perform small services required by the self-proclaimed Major.

Mary, aside from occasionally assisting her protector in service duties, steered clear of the carriage. She had also been invited to occupy one of the soft red leather armchairs in the cabin interior, but she had preferred the hard leather of the saddle, so as not to breathe the same air as that pig dressed as a gentleman. She was most certainly exhausted and sore from the long ride, but she had been so distracted by the constant exchange of glances with Richard Keen that she almost didn't care. The blond braggart rode with his back upright and proud. Even his stallion trotted haughtily. He seemed to be conducting one of those silly horse-riding competitions that the noblemen enjoyed so much. The entirety of the show was aimed, of course, at impressing the girl.
